Post The Fist Bump
Keith Olbermann is reporting that some way right wing guys on Fox "News" are claiming that the charming "fist bump" between Barack and Michelle last week is somehow a gesture used by terrorists or at least those black people who aren't like us nice familiar white people. (They suggest a nice friendly familiar pat on the back instead.)

It'd be REALLY funny if some weren't influenced by this sort of nonsense.

I'll bet most of the posters on DH have been guilty of this terrorist Muslim black subversive evil gesture themselves. Who knew?

P.S. I just googled "Fist Bump" and came up with a completely hilarious Budweiser commercial with that name, topped only by an even funnier Bud commercial called "Swear Jar"--both on You-Tube.

PPS This obviously should be in "Trivialities" rather than "Philosophy"--sorry, spblat!

They must never have watched our most cherish national heroes called professional atheletes before. I see fist bumps at least 24 times per good play in baseball (for a 25 person baseball team).

I know I for one will believe absolutely anything that comes out of Keith Olbermann's mouth, that paragon of left-wing virtue.
Sounds to me like a silly story designed to make conservatives look bad and facilitate his own foaming at the mouth over this or that issue. As to whether there is any truth in the his comments or not, who knows.......?

Like with evolution, no need for intelligent design or divine left wing there ;-)

I just saw the clip and the news anchors says (in the intro) "A fist bump? A pound? A terrorist fist jab? The gesture everyone seems to interpret differently."

She never does explain the terrorist fist jab comment… has anyone ever heard of the fist bump called a terrorist fist jab?

Might be instructive to ask conservatives whether they would put any stock in the alleged story. I for one have seen the fist bump done since I was in high school, and I don't have any reason to believe that the various guys on my HS sports teams were some of Osama's henchmen.

Then Gomtuu77, why on earth would you attack Olbermann for mentioning it, rather than acknowledge that it was dumb for Fox to be drumming that unbelievably stupid story?

The only defense for the Fox anchor might be ignorance: she never watches sports events, so she just made something up?

(This error reminds me of a paper I once heard at a Shakespeare Association meeting, in which the scholar complained about sexism in Shakespeare's time--using as an illustration the naming of certain parts of a printing press: "female" parts were concave, parts that fit into those "female" parts were "male". Of course the same handy terminology is still used by plumbers today; I know this because I'm the irrigation specialist around here and sometimes need to converse with guys in hardware stores. No offense was intended by either the 17th century printers or the current plumbers--unless it's some sort of long-standing terrorist sexist plot.)

That's it! Soon, male fittings will start to look and work like female fittings, one-way valves will become bi-directional, brass fittings will be marrying plastic ones. The plumbing in my house will stop working if the government allows my neighbor to install PEX. The world is going to hell and there's nothing plumbers can do to stop it.

Post Re: The Fist Bump
spblat,

I didn't attack Keith Olbermann for mentioning it. I honestly don't care if he mentions it or not. It's his show, so why not? I merely stated my opinion upon hearing about it. Sounds silly to me for anyone to take a conservative who would say something like that seriously, and sounds silly to take Olbermann seriously in general. That's not an attack though, but a comment on his style of broadcast journalism. He strikes me as more of a left-wing attack dog than an actual journalist, but I like that better than a journalist who pretends to be neutral but really isn't. At least with Olbermann, you know where you stand. If you want additional acknowledgement that it's a stupid story, then you've got it. As for fox news, I don't watch it. I don't have it actually. I only get to watch good 'ole CNN. Hehehehe... Too poor to afford all those big channels that lotsa people watch.
